Brogers Creek to Gerroa Beach Photography
Leon Gregory dashed into the store one day last month in a flurry of excitement. Dressed in his signature black, he was dropping off invitations for the opening of his latest photographic exhibition.
‘Flow’ is part of a collection of magnificent images capturing the flow of Brogers Creek on its journey leading to the ocean south of Gerroa Beach as it metamorphoses through the changing landscape.
Leon’s exhibition is part of the Head On Photo Festival, Australia’s most prestigious photography event and one of the world’s leading photography festivals. Having known Leon for many years as an enthusiastic yet modest musician, I was very keen and curious to experience another side of his artistic genius.
What a delightful surprise I received when I walked into the Shoalhaven Arts Centre to investigate Leon’s exhibition .The photos above particularly caught my eye. By pIaying around with shutter speeds ( I presume) ,the photographs embodied the flow of water as subtle charcoal drawings with layers of underlying translucent and delicate linear markings.
Other works shone with harmonious and complementary colour palettes of the softest hues with flawless delicate textural surfaces. Such is the beauty of nature .Leon’s resourcefulness and creativity in his selection, composition and skill is unanimously evident in his work.
Residing in the area I would imagine has given Leon an awareness, a familiarity and an appreciation for his stunningly pristine surrounds.
But what he has captured from behind his lens confirms Leon’s sensitivity to the nuances, and intricacies of nature. and his eye for interesting, textural and tonal opportunities.
Not only has Leon, through his craftsmanship and artists eye, documented a variety of visual effects created from the flow of Brogers Creek but he has captured the perfection , the consistency, the clarity and the diversity of nature. The outcome….. an impressive collection of beautifully composed artworks of which the images above do not do them justice.
The exhibition is on until Saturday 21st May in the side Gallery of Shoalhaven Arts Centre, Nowra.

I came across this exhibition last week and was suitably impressed with many of Leon’s images, especially the beauty of nature leaving it’s own imprint on the landscape ie. the patterns created by the tide and flowing water. Nature is constantly repeating it’s own designs.
